DataViz Redesign Crime in Vancouver

The aim of this exercise is to pick an existing visualization improvise it using best practices of visualization.
This visualization looks into crime in Vancouver over the past 8 years. Reference tableau public project (original Tableau Project):

Observations : This dashboard organisation of this visualization is good. And also looking at the data set used, the chart types used are good. But there were a few changes that can make the dashboard even better. The following is my attempt at redesigning the dashboard:

Changes to the dashboard.

  • Diverging color to Sequential color:  For ranges which are not diverging in nature its not a good practice to put such a palette. A sequential palette can be associated with an increase in value of range.
  • Axis Label Orientation: The chart type depicting total crime of a particular type has its X axis text oriented in a way difficult to read.
  • A chart showing the year-wise comparison of the number of crimes in Vancouver. This is an interesting observation, the total number of crimes has been falling steadily over the years.
  • Neighborhood crime data: This data when set descending, is easier to see the higher crime areas.
  • Changes in font and color to be consistent. And to give a better visual feel.
